Classroom
Expectations
1. Try your best.
2. Respect others and their property.
3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
In order for students to have a successful year of learning, it is important that
they are responsible, respectful, and cooperative.
If a student chooses to interfere with the learning of others, there will
be consequences for his or her actions.
I utilize a system that allows each student to begin each day positively. My system, a three-five dot rule,
allows each student the opportunity to think about the choices he/she make
before any consequences are handed out. During the day, each time a rule is not being followed, the student will
receive a dot next to his/her name. The first two dots a student receives are warnings.
If a student receives a third dot, he/she will lose 5 minutes of recess. If a student receives 5
dots, he/she will lose all of their recess and a phone call will be made to a parent.
During a student’s loss of recess, he/she will be reminded to think of
the better choices that can be made in the classroom. If a student continues
making bad choices, he/she will be referred to the office.
If a student continuously looses recess, I will be contacting you so that
we can work together to solve the problem.
The staff at Carrie Downie likes to reward and encourage students to make good
choices about their behavior. Students who are responsible, respectful, and
cooperative have the opportunity to receive certificates and rewards. Throughout the year, students who make
good choices will also attend many ABC Assemblies. These assemblies are high
interest enrichment assemblies.
Between assemblies, if a student has three referrals and/or phone calls
home, he/she will not attend the next assembly.
Homework
Students will receive a weekly homework package. All
homework assignments are review work from lessons currently being taught. Your
child may need assistance in reading the direction and completing the homework
assignments. Each homework package is due at the end of the week. Homework
will be checked for completeness and accuracy.
Teamwork
Your child will sit with a team of 5-6 students that will change throughout the year.
This team experience will encourage students to work together toward a common goal.
Each team will earn points for working together, completing work,
readiness, and other team goals.
The team with the most points at the end of each week will earn a special
prize.
Communication
I highly regard communication between you and me as an essential part of your
child’s education. As your child’s teacher, I am always available if you have
any questions or concerns with your child’s education.
I may be reached by email, phone, or by written letter.
The Carrie Downie Elementary School folder that I provided at the beginning
of the year is an excellent source of communication.
I check the “To School” side on a daily basis.
This is a good place to put any notes or information that is addressed to
me or any staff member at Carrie Downie.
Your child will use this folder to bring home school work and other school related information.
In the folder will be completed school work, homework assignments, lunch menus, letters from the
principal or PTA, and more. This folder can fill-up fast, so please make it
part of your daily routine to read all papers and remove them from the folder.
Portfolios
I will keep certain work samples in each student’s portfolio during the school
year. The portfolio is available
for your review at any time during the year, especially during conferences. The
purpose of the portfolio is to show the student’s academic growth through his/her school year.
Supplies
The Colonial School District will supply all needed supplies in order for your child to have a
successful year in first grade. Your child will have access
to pencils, scissors, folders, paper, and a variety of art medium.
